The West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church supports a wide variety of mission partners, both local and global, in advancing our common mission to 'make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.' Each month, we will join together in praying for our brothers and sisters doing mission and ministry around the world.

September: Climate Change

The last few years have seen an unprecedented number of natural disasters, and 2023 is no different. Exacerbated by the warming of our planet, these disasters have also been more severe, causing untold damage and killing thousands. Just this summer, we have seen wildfires burn through Maui and Louisiana, and Hurricane Idalia cause flooding in the southeast. Our United Methodist Social Principles say we have a responsibility to change the climate for the better: “We acknowledge the global impact of humanity’s disregard for God’s creation. … The adverse impacts of global climate change disproportionately affect individuals and nations least responsible for the emissions. We therefore support efforts of all governments to require mandatory reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and call on individuals, congregations, businesses, industries, and communities to reduce their emissions.” (Global Climate Stewardship, ¶160.D)

This month, please pray for:

  • Week 1: All those impacted by natural disasters around the world.
  • Week 2: Governments to take seriously their responsibility to reduce carbon emissions now.
  • Week 3: Individuals to place the wellbeing of others above their own convenience.
  • Week 4: The Church to take the lead in global efforts to reduce the impacts of climate change, especially on the most vulnerable.
